Signs a loved one may need help at home
Many families notice small changes before anyone asks for help. Spotting them early can keep a loved one safe and independent for longer.
Changes to watch for
- Personal care slipping: wearing the same clothes, skipping showers, or unkempt hair and nails
- A home that is harder to keep up: piles of laundry or dishes, clutter, or spoiled food in the fridge
- Missed meals or weight loss
- Medication mix-ups: missed doses or pills left over
- Trouble getting around: unsteady walking, new bruises, or a recent fall
- Missed appointments or unpaid bills
- Pulling back from friends, church or activities they used to enjoy
Starting the conversation
Pick a calm moment and focus on what they want: staying at home, safely. Ask what feels hard, and offer help with one or two tasks first, such as bathing or housekeeping. Involve their doctor or case manager if they have one.
